Top Selling Car Brands in September 2024 - Car Sales Report

September 2024 continued to be a slow month for the passenger vehicle industry, marking the second consecutive month of a year-on-year (YoY) decline. Heavy rains in multiple regions, including Kerala and Gujarat, disrupted the market and affected sales. Rising inventory levels at dealerships have led to increased discounts on cars, signalling stress in the market. As a result, OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) have reportedly started reducing dispatches to dealerships to manage stock levels. India's top three carmakers all recorded a decline in sales for September 2024.
However, the month also witnessed some exciting new launches, including Mahindra’s highly anticipated Thar Roxx and Tata's Curvv and Citroen’s Basalt coupe. These pre-festive season launches are expected to help the respective OEMs gain volumes and drive traffic to their showrooms. The competition for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th spots among manufacturers has become intense, with Mahindra closing in on Tata—M&M was just 865 units short of Tata in September 2024! With these new models, Tata and Mahindra aim to climb to the No. 2 position, while Hyundai is expected to fight to maintain its lead, leveraging the launch of the Alcazar and its upcoming IPO.
Maruti Suzuki saw a decline of 8.4% in September 2024 compared to the same period last year. Its market share dropped to 40.4%, marking a 3% YoY decrease. This was the second consecutive month of decline for Maruti Suzuki.
Hyundai retained the second spot, but its sales fell by 8% YoY. The brand’s market share also shrank by 1%, and for the third time in this fiscal year, Hyundai’s monthly sales dropped below the 50,000 mark.
Tata Motors dispatched 44,145 units to its dealers in September 2024, down from 45,515 units in September 2023, marking a 3% YoY drop.
On the other hand, Mahindra, Toyota, and Kia managed to register YoY growth, standing out amid the overall market downturn.
